I was recently in Australia traveling and how easy is it to neglect your workout routine. Enjoying the company of others, good food, and drinks can sneak up on your pretty quickly. I don’t believe it has to be that way. Enjoying your travels and staying in shape can go hand in hand.
Here are a few ideas to keep in shape, and eat well while traveling.
• Rent Bikes: Want to see a city in its entire glory; bike through it. I recently was on an Island in Western Australia and the only mode of transportation was by bicycle. It was great to watch everyone riding (with their helmets) stopping from time to time to take in the scenery. We had a lunch break and by the end of the day it was wonderful to have such a productive day! I wouldn’t recommend this when they drive on the opposite side of the road, it can be a little stressful.
• Walk: Instead of paying for a bus, car or taxi check out the area. Can you walk it? What better way to interact with locals, find hidden restaurants or markets than walking around the city! I have met some of the best people walking around cities, browsing natural shops, markets and asking for directions. You never know what adventure is around the corner.
• Bring Bands: I have a friend from Germany who brings workout bands with him when he travels. It is easy to transport in a suitcase or bag. You can workout anywhere at any time. TRX Suspension Training System works well for this!
• EATING: My favorite part of traveling is making food with friends! Eating the local food is important to understanding the local culture; enjoy a clean meal in or out. Getting yourself to a local farmers market if you are on a long stay is a great idea. They will have plenty of pre-made food, raw veggies and fruit to snack on during the day. Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you need to eat out for every meal, hit up a grocery store and get creative.
These are just a few suggestions for staying in shape while traveling! Enjoy.
